Don’t let the temps in the teens deter you from getting outside. Get prepared to go outdoors!
Today, January 20, 2026, is Take a Walk Outdoors Day and we want to share some cold-weather walking tips to get outside and moving.
Preparation is key!
Before you even step out the door:
Check the forecast and dress appropriately. This article provides some great information on how to dress in layers and why: The Ultimate Guide to Layering [The Secret of Staying Warm In the Winter]
If hitting a trail or park, go prepared with the 10 hiking essentials. Check out this U.S. National Park’s article: Ten Essentials (U.S. National Park Service)
Scout out your path. If sidewalks or trails are snow-covered or packed, plan to wear sturdy boots with good treads or consider ice cleats/crampons. Hiking poles can also help.
When walking on snow or ice-covered sidewalks, roads, or property, be sure to walk with caution.
Bend your knees slightly and walk flat-footed.
Point your feet out slightly like a penguin. Learn to walk like a penguin!
Keep your center of gravity over your feet as much as possible.
Keep your hands to your side.
Watch where you are stepping.
Protect your hands. Wear gloves, keep your hands out of your pockets, and reduce what you are carrying. This will prevent you from serious injury if you fall.
Be seen. With dreary days come less sunlight. Wear bright colors, reflective gear, and/or lights when out in the evenings.
If walking or hiking alone, have a plan and share your plan with a family member or friend.
Take in the sounds. Leave the earbuds or headphones at home. There is still plenty of wildlife to hear and see in the winter!
Earn hours! Our 570GO (Get Outdoors) is a year-long program, and it is never too late to join. Learn more and print a tracker. Be sure to note your start date and earn as many hours as you can!
